About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity to join The Open University as a Lecturer in Creative Industries (Media) in our new School of Creative Industries. We are looking for a dedicated individual to join a team developing innovative online learning resources in the Creative Industries and, specifically, for our new BA (Hons) Film & Media qualification.
You must be enthusiastic about our unique mission and about working in teams to develop a new curriculum which embraces the opportunities of distance learning. We welcome applications from those with teaching, research and/or media industry experience who can demonstrate an understanding of the academic and vocational needs of students looking to study and work within the creative industries and, specifically, in the broadcast media sector.
You will be contributing to module design and teaching in respect of media practice and media studies. You will also be encouraged and supported to develop research and impact activities within the area. While it is expected that you will use your research expertise to expand our current curriculum, you must also have the potential and willingness to teach and contribute to modules outside any specialism.

You can live anywhere in the United Kingdom, but the role is based contractually at the Open University’s Milton Keynes campus and involves attendance there at academic community and module team meetings, for which travel and subsistence are not provided.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching
- contribute to the development and delivery of high quality, distance-learning curriculum in Media at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
- develop engaging and accessible online module content in broadcast media practice and production.
- support student learning activity through the preparation of assessment materials and participation in Quality Assurance and examination processes.
Industry experience and Research
- enhance the School and Faculty research and scholarship profile through the development and delivery of a quality research and impact portfolio.
- draw upon professional experience to develop teaching methods and materials with a vocational focus in broadcast media.
- enhance the School’s links with the media industry to enable collaborations and facilitate knowledge exchange.
- generate grant or external funding income, where appropriate, to support your research.
Administration, Management and other duties
- engage with appropriate academic administrative tasks and play an active role within the School, Faculty and wider University, as required by the Head of School.
Skills and Experience
Essential Criteria
- a good honours degree in a relevant subject.
- experience of developing and delivering (teaching) media-focused curriculum in an HE setting.
- experience of media industry practice and digital content creation in a professional/industry context, with a track record of outputs that evidences this work.
- a professional network which can be mobilised to develop collaborations, enhance curriculum design and support research and knowledge exchange.
- evidence of being able to work collaboratively, within an organisation and with external bodies.
- evidence of excellent communication and organisational skills, including the ability to work to deadlines.
- commitment to the aims, ethos and values of The Open University including the principles and practice of equality and diversity.
Desirable Criteria
- a PhD, MFA or MBA in a relevant subject.
- evidence of working with, and producing, innovative distance learning materials that demonstrate practical and vocational skills.
- a successful research profile, with a track record of publications or equivalent practice-based work in Media.
